Tanglewood Festival of Lights

In North Carolina, USA, just west of Winston-Salem is a large park, usually used for golfing, and horse-back riding. It borders the Yadkin River, and is a popular place all year round, but never so much so as the month of December.  That month, the park creates the largest and most spectacular light shows in the SouthEast USA.  With nearly a million lights, there just is nothing quite like it.  You drive your car through the park, and see snowflakes falling from the sky (hooked up into the trees, of course) with reindeer, and elves, and angels, and gigantic poinsettias over 40 feet tall.

There is a tunnel of lights to go through, horses jumping endlessly over fences, a huge fire engine  (lights covering a real one), and in the pond, you can find not only ships, but sea horses, and mermaids, and jumping frogs.

Enchantment is everywhere, and if you’d like to make your visit last, you can stop by the bonfire and roast a few marshmallow, or get some hot chocolate.  The craft shop there is open, and hosts fine holiday crafts from over 75 local craftsmen.  You can even catch a hayride.

If you are in central North Carolina this season, this is one of the places you really should not miss.  I’ve been there dozens of times, and it never fails to amaze.

Travel Safety Tips

Traveling to new and exotic places is fun, exciting, and educational.  There is so much to see and do, and so much of it is new.  Sometimes that newness, the fact that you really don’t know the place well, can lend itself to situations that are less than optimal.

To keep yourself, and your belongings safe in a new place, here are a few tips:

1-      Be on the alert in crowded places, like airports, train stations, subways, bus stations, even markets and festivals.  Crowded places are favorites of pick-pockets.  Be aware of your surroundings, and alert to loud arguments, bumps, or other situations that could have been staged just to distract you, while your pocket is picked, or your handbag grabbed.

2-      Keep your possessions close at hand.  Keep hand-bags clutched tightly, not swinging from the shoulder by long straps.

3-      Do not place things on the table in an outdoor café, where they might be snagged by a passerby as you look in another direction.

4-      Check out the city, and stay away from questionable areas.  You do that in your own city don’t you?

5-      If you are using public transportation like a bus or train, try to sit near the driver or some other authority just as a precaution.

In everything, awareness of your surroundings is key.  Knowing what is happening around you is the first step to staying safe.

The Airline Lost My Dog!

Have you ever had a friend who had difficulties because the airline lost their baggage?  Well, dogs being transferred from plane to plane can sometimes be lost, too.  Mistakes are made, and the dog may not follow you onto your connecting flight, or it may just have been placed on the wrong flight to begin with.  Sometimes you luggage is never found again—unfortunately, sometimes the dog is never found again.

To prevent this from happening, be sure to have your contact information in as many places as possible.  Make sure the dog has a permanent ID tag attached to him that has your phone #, home address, and any contact in formation that may be important.  Make sure his travel cage has the same information attached to it, and inside it.  Microchips embedded under the dog’s fur is another good idea, as vets and pounds now check for these regularly, when a dog is found.  Another possibility is a tattoo.

All these things may seem to be overkill, but your pet is part of your family, and you know that you want to do everything possible to make sure it stays that way.

Traveling Safely With Your Dog

Many people worry about their pets when they leave on vacation, and would be happier sharing their holiday with the family dog in tow.  In order to make this as comfortable as possible, there are a few things to keep in mind.

1-      Does your dog want to travel?  Is he calm in new situations?  Is he healthy?  House-trained?  Will your dog be quiet if left alone?  If your dog is stressed out, the owners will be stressed out too.

2-      What do you plan to do on your vacation?  If your plan is to visit parks and vistas, where the dog can come along, great!  But if you have to leave your pet alone in a strange hotel room all day long while you site-see, he’s not going to be very happy about it.

3-      How will you be traveling?  If you fly, will you be taking taxies once you arrive (many do not allow pets) or are you renting a car (be sure to check whether or not pets are allowed).

4-      What are your hotel’s polices on dogs?  Is there an extra pet fee?  A limit on size?  A limit on the number of pets you can bring?  Are you able to leave him unattended?

5-      It goes without saying that you need to make sure you clean up after your dog.  Also, be courteous about the room, and wipe off any dirt or sand from his paws before letting him back into the room.

Liechtenstein National Day

Liechtenstein’s National Day is on August 15th this year. It is the biggest event this small country has each year. Although Liechtenstein is Europe’s smallest country, it knows how to put on a big party. Starting it all is an open-air mass out beside the royal castle, which is on a hillside above Vaduz, the capital. This will be followed by a garden party in the Prince’s castle. Every one is invited, including tourists. There will be food and drink for everyone, and the royal family will be mingling with all, for a chance to be met.

The party lasts all day long, and finishes with fireworks, using the castle as a grand backdrop, and at the end, all lit up in flames on the castle wall you can see the words, “For God, Prince, and Fatherland. How patriotic is that?

Ending at 2 AM, there are free bus rides home for everyone.

Cork X Southwest Festival- Ireland

It seems like good old Skibbereen may become an ideal place for live music this weekend, with the Cork by Southwest festival occurring on Saturday, August 1. The fest is going to be headlined by The Waterboys (shown), who are likewise performing in Galway the prior evening. Luckily the big event will be tented thereby entirely rain-proof. The line-up also offers Jerry Fish and the Mudbug Club, Lisa Hannigan, John Spillane and David O’Doherty. Camping is readily available on location for people who would like to brave the elements in the name good fun, with plenty of accommodation also on offer nearby.

This one-day celebration in Skibbereen , West Cork, is rapidly turning out to be just about the most well-liked festivals in Ireland. The main tent has hosted The Waterboys, Lisa Hannigan, and Fred. The De Barra’s Tent, in my opinion the best, houses a mixture of music and comedy, with acts like Luka Bloom, Nell Bryden, John Spillane and The Guggenheim Grotto, and there’s also Irish traditional and folk music. In the week leading up to the festival, Irish bands play in venues around Skibbereen as part of the fringe festival.

If you’re going to be in Ireland next week, this is not to be missed!

Beautiful it is, possibly one of the world’s most beautiful islands.  It was used as the setting for the classic movie South Pacific.  Unlike so many other popular destinations, it hasn’t changed an awful lot since then. It still has perfect pale sandy beaches, and perfect turquoise water, and an almost endless number of Read more »
